Artist in Residence

Our Artist in Residence for 2024

We were delighted to introduce Anna King as the Winner of our Artist Residency 2024 at Marchmont.

Throughout February Anna will be taking up residence in the Old Squash Court Studio at Marchmont Estate, near Duns, courtesy of Marchmont Makers Foundation.

Well renowned local artist Anna King has a long history with Marchmont, and indeed the Old Squash Court, which she used as her studio long before it was renovated by our late Patron Hugo Burge.

She was later commissioned by Hugo to paint the old greenhouses at Marchmont, to make a record of them before they too were fully renovated.

Although the reclamation by nature of marginal or disused pieces of land and buildings had long been a theme running through Anna's work, it was this commission that started her interest in old, dilapidated greenhouses.

Anna is excited to return to Marchmont, where it all began, to work on further large-scale paintings of abandoned greenhouses, where nature has taken over, bursting through the windows and encroaching on the structures.  Using a combination of oils and pencil line her work will celebrate the weeds and wildness, and beauty found in the unpredictable tangle of encroaching plant life.

Anna graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 2005 and has built a successful career as a landscape painter over the last 18 years, showing widely in solo and group shows all over the UK.  She has won several awards including the Jolomo Lloyds TSB Landscape Award in 2007, and has featured in a BBC2 short film, Making Art Work; First Ideas to Final Piece.

We are thrilled that Anna will be exhibiting at the Borders Art Fair, where she’ll be showing some of the work created during the residency, alongside other pieces.   Visit her on Stand no. 29 to hear more about her time at Marchmont, and the beautiful work she creates.

About Marchmont....

Located near Greenlaw in the Scottish Borders, Marchmont House has undergone an award-winning restoration under the directorship of the late Hugo Burge, whose aim was to establish Marchmont as a home to the highest quality makers and creators.

As part of the journey to establish Marchmont as an integral, and influential part of the national visual arts and creative landscape, a series of courtyard buildings near the house have been converted to form a selection of workshops and studios providing high quality, affordable work spaces for artists and craft makers. Hugo established the Marchmont Makers Foundation to take this vision forward, and over the last few years, and as part of their on-going support for the Borders Art Fair, Marchmont Makers Foundation has invited us to select an artist to benefit from a month long fully funded residency.  For details of previous residency beneficiaries, please click here.

Studios and cottages are also available to artists for privately funded residencies.  Please contact Marchmont Makers Foundation for details.

Marchmont House will be open for tours throughout the weekend of the Borders Art Fair, to allow visitors the chance to see and hear about their incredible art collection.  For further details and information on how to book, please click here
